One question that can make your dashboard fail from the start

Let's take a look at this meme I from a previous post on LinkedIn:
What surprises me is the number of likes, I didn't think this meme would be so popular.
Obviously, this situation is common and particularly frustrating. You may have :
- UI skills
- Talented people
- Dashboard templates
- Data visualization expert
- Visual identity or design system...
If the first questions you asked in a user interview are the wrong ones, such as :
"How many fields do you need?", all the items in the list above are worthless.
This question will trigger an incredible number of rows and columns trying to answer so many questions at once. The user experience will be greatly affected. Your dashboard will have to be redesigned in no time, costing you money, energy and confidence in your strategy, tool or worse, your skills.
This reveals a lack of methodology and UX skills in data teams.
Don't ask end users to find a solution. It's your job.
Remember, put yourself in the end-user's shoes. Ask them questions :
- About their pain points
- About the problem they're trying to solve
- About how they use data on a daily basis
At the end of the user research and ideation step of the design process, it's your responsibility to validate the right metrics/KPI and dimensions that will help users achieve their goals with data, through this dashboard.
